What is 3D CNC plastic milling and how does it work?

At Rapid Prototyping, we use advanced 3D CNC plastic milling technology to make your ideas a reality. 3D CNC plastic milling is a machining method in which computer-controlled machines mill plastics with extreme precision. CNC, or Computer Numerical Control, means that the machines work from digital designs. This makes it possible to manufacture plastic parts with great precision, even for the most complex designs. Thanks to our advanced software, we can realize even the smallest details of your design so that the final product exactly matches your vision.

  • CNC Technology: Plastic milling is done by fully automated machines programmed to follow a digital design. This process ensures consistent quality and repeatability of production. We ensure that every part, no matter how complicated, always meets the specifications you need.
  • Accuracy and complexity: 3D CNC milling allows the manufacture of geometries with tight tolerances and intricate details that would not be achievable with other methods. This high degree of precision is critical for industries where reliability and accuracy are crucial, such as the medical and aerospace industries.

Applications of CNC milling

Our CNC plastic milling technology is used in various industries because of its precision and versatility. Some examples include:

  • Medical sector: We use CNC milling to make precise medical components, such as enclosures for medical devices and custom-made prosthetics. The accuracy of our machines ensures that medical components are reliable and safe.
  • Electronics: Plastic enclosures for electronic devices and connectors are often manufactured using our CNC milling due to the high demands for accuracy and finish. We understand how important it is that each part fits precisely, especially with electronic components where space is limited and functionality is crucial.
  • Mechanical engineering and automotive: In the mechanical engineering and automotive industries, we mill lightweight, durable plastic parts that are resistant to chemical influences and mechanical stress. Our parts contribute to efficient and reliable performance of machines and vehicles. It also helps our customers reduce their production costs by using high-quality plastics.
  • Aerospace: For the aerospace industry, we mill parts that must be lightweight and strong at the same time. Our materials and processes meet the stringent requirements of these industries, ensuring safety and reliability.

Materials for 3D CNC plastic milling

Not all plastics are the same, and the choice of material depends on the application. At Rapid Prototyping, we have experience with a wide range of plastics. Below is an overview of commonly used materials:

  • ABS and Polycarbonate: Commonly used for parts that require both strength and durability. ABS is popular for its ruggedness and impact resistance, while polycarbonate is ideal for applications where transparency and strength are both important.
  • Nylon and POM (Delrin): Suitable for parts that must withstand wear and friction. Nylon and POM are often used in applications where mechanical properties are of great importance, such as gears, bearings and moving parts.
  • PEEK and PEI: These high-performance plastics are ideal for applications where high temperatures and chemical resistance are a requirement. PEEK and PEI are excellent for use in aerospace, medical and other industries that have high demands for their materials.
  • Acrylic and PVC: For applications where transparency and weather resistance are important, such as outdoor display components and parts. Acrylic offers clarity and an excellent surface finish, while PVC is often used for its chemical resistance.

Frequently asked questions about 3D CNC milling

How accurate is CNC milling?

CNC milling is extremely precise and can achieve tolerances down to one-tenth of a millimeter. At Rapid Prototyping, we use advanced CNC machines that operate with precision, allowing us to produce parts that meet the most stringent requirements. This makes CNC milling an ideal choice for applications where accuracy is crucial, such as in the medical and electronics industries.

When do I choose CNC milling over 3D printing?

CNC milling is often the best choice when high levels of precision, strength and durability are needed. In addition, CNC milling is advantageous for larger runs because the process can be faster than 3D printing and offers a wider range of materials. If you need parts that need to fit precisely or when it comes to series production of identical parts, CNC milling is often more efficient and cost-effective than 3D printing.

Which plastics are suitable for CNC milling?

There are many different plastics suitable for CNC milling, depending on the specific application. At Rapid Prototyping, we work with materials such as ABS, Polycarbonate, Nylon, POM (Delrin) and PEEK. Each of these materials has unique properties, such as impact resistance, wear resistance or chemical resistance. This makes them suitable for a variety of industries, from electronics to aerospace.

What tolerances are possible with CNC milling?

We generally adhere to ISO 2768F with a minimum of +/-0.1mm.

Do you have specific requirements? Send your part with your requirements! We will get back to you as soon as possible

What are the typical lead times for CNC milling?

On average, we deliver milled parts within 2 to 3 weeks. The exact delivery time depends on the number of parts and the desired finish. This applies to both plastic and metal parts.

What do I need to consider in order to CNC mill parts?

For many parts, milling radius will remain, this is inherent in the technology. Once you request something, we will also indicate where you will encounter these radii.

In addition, it is good to know that you have a minimum detail of 0.3mm. If you would like to have logo in your model, it should be at least 0.3mm.

What materials are possible?

We stock a wide range of materials including:

Plastics: ABS, PC, POM, PVDF, PEEK

Metals: aluminum, brass, stainless steel

See all available materials on our website: wrapidprototyping.nldprototyping.nl/prototyping/materialen

What finishes are possible?

After milling, different finishes are possible, depending on the material and application:

Smooth out of the machine

Smoothened for coating

Polished (for transparent plastics and metals)

Coated (RAL or PMS)

Powder coating (metals)

Anodized (aluminum)

Looking for a specific finish? Feel free to contact us - chances are we can make it happen.

Up to what size can you CNC mill?

Our largest milling machine has a machining volume of 2300 x 1500 x 1500 mm. For plastic parts, we consider per project whether it is more economical to mill in parts and glue them neatly. This can significantly reduce costs compared to milling from one solid block.
